MODIPHIUS ADVENT CALENDAR - 17th DECEMBER
I'm there, hunched over my desk, filling in the green panels of Thunderbird 2, the teacher walks over and is impressed with the accuracy of my drawings. Thunderbirds is burned in to my eyes as i've been watching it avidly as a 4 or 5 year old whilst at kindergarten. I don't remember the exact age but my drawing book at the time is full of Thunderbirds in various action scenes. I was really really good at re-drawing the ships based on the Thunderbirds annuals I had (not sure if you have them elsewhere but basically hard cover graphic novels for kids). I had the toys, I read every story, I recreated the missions in my dreams. Next I'm 6, maybe 7. I'm invited to the 18th birthday fancy dress party of my brother's girlfriend. Who was I going to be? Virgil of course! Somehow we had a small blue jumpsuit in bright blue (no idea!) I had an orange ray run that fit the part and my mum made the sash. At the last minute my brother Nick appeared with the hand drawn International Rescue badge. I rocked it!
I could have no idea at that age that it might be possible to later help develop a board game based on Thunderbirds, that one day I'd meet the awesome Jamie Anderson who's carrying on Gerry Anderson's legacy or that we'd get such a legendary designer as Matt Leacock involved to make a boardgame that actually feels like your part of the International Rescue organisation. All this comes about because I let myself dream crazy ideas. Nothing is beyond your grasp if you believe in yourself, take a few risks and have a passion for what you're doing. Unveiling the Thunderbirds banner at UK Games Expo this year with Matt was an amazing moment (right). We've got big plans for the Thunderbirds Co-operative game in February so sign up on the Thunderbirds page if you haven't done so already and you'll be the first ones to know! |
